Opening the Hatch

krikalev Posted by Hello

I am still watching NASA TV and have witnessed the hatch opening from Pirs docking compartment. The Expedition 11 crew was greeted with the traditional bread and salt which is the Russian way to greet visitors in International Space Station. The hatch was opened after two hours and a half after docking at 8:44 am Moscow time that occured over Eastren Asia. The Commander Krikalev attempted to open the hatch after 2 hour pre-hatch procedures. However, the needed to equalize the pressure. Later, the cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov and astronaut Leroy Chiao went to open up the hatch. I had some problems watching the opening. The video was slow. So I saw Krikalev suddenly on the right side and astronauts Philip flying toward the camera. But I didn’t see the Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori.

Check NASA site later for more photos and info

Hi Maryam!
I tried to get NASA TV, but couldn't - maybe it is my dial-up connection - so I missed the docking! :-( I did not think they did the bread-and-salt greeting, but perhaps they re-introduced this (they did it on Mir).

Hi Suzy,

I was lucky that NASA TV worked for me that time. Yeah, I didn't see "the bread & Salt greeting" thing, but I heard them talking about it. And I missed the moment that when they opened the hatch and entered ISS. Thanx for the info ;)I better fix that

Hey Maryam. Your blog was the first Kuwaiti blog I ever read. I hope you all the best.

Sometimes when I read something about astronomy or space exploration, I'd think about telling you about it only to find out that you're two steps ahead! Anyway, I found came across this cool movie about the Genesis space probe landing going bad.. Maybe you saw it, maybe you didn't. If you did, then excuse me!

Great blog :) After a week of hard work, my fellow-countryman Vittori will be back on Earth. I'm glad he served under the command of Krykalev ;)
Don't worry about the bread-and-salt tradition, this time Vittori brought up some traditional Italian food :D

Edjamacated Guy: No, I haven't watch the Genesis landing. And thanks alot for the video link ;) I'll watch it in few. Feel free to send any space links

Luca: Great to have other Italian visitors to my blog beside (Alain, the ISS Fan Club editor). Today is the 25, Is Vittori back to Earth already? I don't know I have been busy lately and I cannot keep up with space news. It will be great if I can watch the Soyuz landing. I wish to speak not only to Krikalev but Vittori as well. Unfortunately, I didn't get the radio license and my equipments yet. However, I wish your "fellow-countryman" Vittori will go to space for the third time ;) Hahaha!! Wonder what kind of food Vittori brought….
