Day One- Fukuoka, Japan

In last few posts, it seems to be unclear to my reader that I had been already to Japan so currently I am in Kuwait. Now I am re-writing my old diaries in Japan since I didn't have regular access to the internet while I was Japan. So I apologize for the confusion.

On 12th October, I arrived Fukuoka International Airport around 8 pm in Domestic terminal. There supposed to be someone from the congress waiting for the delegates to arrive. At Fukuoka airport, a guy who was with me all the flights from Dubai --> Osaca --> Fukuoka. I found out he is from Afghanistan and he is attending Space Generation Congress (SGC) as well. We decided to go together to exchange money and find our way to the hotel. We took a free bus at the airport to the International terminal for exchanging money (1000 yen is equal to 3 Kuwaiti Dinar). There, I tried to call home but I had no clue how to use the Japanese phone cards. I gave up after many tries. We catch the yellow bus going back to the domestic terminal to take a subway to the hotel from there. In the bus, I saw white man. I don't know I had a feelings he was SGC delegate. So I asked "SGC?" he was like "Yeah!" Good he was with the Japanese guide that he supposed to be waiting for us. We went to the subway, each bought a ticket for 250 Yen. The Afghani guy left at different station. So me and Jamey got off the subway station "Gion Station". There I saw some Japanese teenagers dancing break dance. I’d love to watch them but I cannot which I am carrying all the luggage and my heavy laptop on my shoulder. We were there and we lost the directions guide to the hotel. We were lost in Fukuoka city for two hours. We asked many Japanese people in the streets but they speak poor English. We finally met a nice Japanese man wearing dark business suit who decided to take us right to the door of the hotel. Damn, I was so tired I couldn't carry my luggage anymore. The Japanese guy was very nice. He presented his business card to Jamey.

At the entrance of the hotel, you should take off your shoes and put them in plastic bags. 602 was the number of my room. Surprisingly, it was so tiny. Only with two beds and small TV. Showers and toilets are shared. I went downstairs to call home. I found out that I should use specific pay phone to use this phone card I bought at the airport. Anyhow, there at the reception I saw many delegates. Chris the manager was there. He says “Hey do you have a project with Maryanne?” I was like “ Maryanne, I don’t know her” He said “She is doing a movie with you”. “Oh yeah I know her. She is here?” I said and I was surprised that she was staying at the same hotel. “yes, she is in 307”. Oh that’s good I expected her to meet me at the airport. Maryanne Galvin, is an independent documantry film maker and her films won several awards. I have been in contact with her via email since last May. She stumbled through my blog and thought it would be interesting to include me in her movie and make interview. Oh great I will meet her tomorrow morning. I went back to my room. It seems that my roommate didn’t arrive Fukuoka not for today. There I rested on my bed watching Japanese TV next to me a kimono.

Leaving to Japan!!

Yes, I left to Japan the next day. I was at Dubai International Airport, happy and excited. I was trying to memorize my Japanese vocabulary. I took this book "Carrying The Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys" with me to read on the plane but I slept during the whole 11 hours of the flight.

I am still mad at my workplace because I could've arrange some sponsorship from Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences( KFAS). But my workplace told me that they want to sponsor my trip under their name not KFAS. I trusted them and they turned their back on me in the last minute.

Watch Out For Voice From Space

The astronaut William (Bill) McArther has been being very active on 145.800 MHz. So watch out when for your ISS pass over your region during the lunch and dinner time of the crew. I am waiting for the chance to have a radio contact with Bill. My friend Mauricio (PY4MAB) from Brazil had great contact with Bill last Saturday and asked him a very nice question about space.

Mauricio: What do you say about space?
Bill: What do I say about space... uh.. I think it is very important for people from many many different countries unit together to explore space (singnal was breaking up).

Hmmm I have to think of some good question to ask Bill. I hope that ISS passes over Kuwait are good and during their lunch and dinner time.

Two Weeks ago!!

Two weeks ago I was upset... my workplace promised me to fully sponsor my trip including airfare ticket, hotel, congress fees and so on to attend the Space Generation Congress in Japan. But twenty eight hours before my flight, I was informed by the manager that they will not sponsor my trip because it's not covered by media.

It was a big shock to me. I was mad, angry and upset. My plans are screwed... my stay in Japan will be shorter than expected. I will not be able to attend the International Astronautical Congress and the SIA board meeting. As soon I arrived home, I burst in crying and sobbing. However it doesn't matter as long I will enjoy something that I really love.

Our Sweet Sergei is Back Home!!!

Last night around 1 am while I was preparing for my trip and packing my stuff. Sergei Krikalev along with John Phillips with Greg Olsen were also leaving the Space Station and closing the hatch. I was listening to sweet voice of Sergei live speaking in Russian and watching him on NASA TV. Well, now they returned to Earth safely in Kazakhstan. We love you, Sergei!!!!

New Station Crew Launches From Baikonur

Commander William McArthur and Flight Engineer Valery Tokarev, the 12th international space station crew, launched aboard their Soyuz TMA spacecraft at 11:55 p.m. EDT Friday to begin a 182-day stay in space.

Their Soyuz TMA capsule reached orbit a little less than nine minutes after liftoff. Russian flight controllers reported the spacecraft’s solar arrays had deployed as scheduled, and that all appeared normal.

The Soyuz TMA is scheduled to dock with the station at 1:32 a.m. EDT on Oct. 3.

With the Expedition 12 crew was American Greg Olsen, the third private citizen in space. He is flying under a contract with the Russian Federal Space Agency. He will spend about eight days on the station.

Olsen will conduct scientific experiments on the station, and then return to Earth with Expedition 11. That crew, Commander Sergei Krikalev and NASA Science Officer John Phillips, has been on the orbiting laboratory since April.
