Both astronauts Ernst Messerschmid and Story Musgrave had inspired me lately and kept me walking on my path. When I met Messerschmid during the space congress in Spain, he inspired me. His enthusiastic has stroked me. I admire his work regarding space never stop. He made me realize that there is no beginning or ending for learning. Sometimes I feel that it will take longer than desired to reach my dreams. I had to sacrifice things in order to be here (in Russia) which I had to quit the comfort settled life I had in Kuwait including quitting my job which piss of my boss and thought it was nonsense just for the sake of space. However after meeting Messerschmid, he changed my point view and made me confirmed my desire. It doesn't matter how long it takes but it matters is how much I enjoy the things I do to reach my goal.
Story has inspired me last night when I discovered this documentary movie about him "Before he became an astronaut, Story Musgrave was a mathematician, a chemist at Kodak, a trauma surgeon and a pilot, an experimental parachutist and later a poet and holder of a degree in literature. He has the longest career as an astronaut worldwide and he flew into space more often than anyone, 6 times. He went on his last mission in 1996, at age 61, to conduct several walks in space. He is a father of 6 children… "
He is a great person. He never stop learning over 30 years. After reading his biographical data on NASA website, and visiting his personal website, so last night I decided to post "Quit space? No way!" and I mean it.
Thank you Messerschmid and Story, you are my favorites astronauts beside Sergei Krikalev :) I also want to thank who supported me in last two weeks either by sending me emails or leaving comments on my blog. Your emails and comments helped me to be stronger and back on the track.

Thank you eshda3wa! and I didn't want to make you cry ;)
Oh My God!
I had no idea you were in Russia now, and for about 6 months even. It's me who should apologize for not being well in touch..
Walla maryam let me tell you something. I used to tell some of my friends and some other people I knew about a girl whom "I knew throgh the internet", and who was very much into space. Your decission to head for studyig space aeronautics in Russia was not a small step at all; I see it as the major step towards realizing your dreams. You have no idea how proud I feel.
Let me tell you this: I have no doubt that in a couple of years from now, I'll be able to tell those friends that this girl I once talked to you about works in a control station out there or even better is out in the space. :)
Really Maryam you've reached so far and there is nothing that should hold you back now. I have faith in you.
Maryam J you make a lot of people proud. I wish you keep that in mind always ;)
Wishing you the best of luck,
UzF

YOU GO GIRL!
i just got a message from the kuwaiti sms news service, it mentioned that a kuwaiti female was accepted into a russian university and is on her way to becoming the first arab/muslim female astronaute, u make us proud, goodluck!
Hey watzup? Great blog!
Well I hope u do realize your dream of going into space. Best of luck;)
Hi Maryam,
That's great you're studying aero eng in Russia. It's not surprising you get frustrated at times. Either eng. school or life in an unfamiliar culture would be enough to do that. As I guess you've discovered, it's important not to make big decisions at times of upset.
If you are studying aero eng. then surely you're making good progress toward your goal! Remember, even Buzz Aldrin was stuck at MIT studying astrodynamics early in the manned program. I'm sure he hardly looked like someone who'd fly in space but he ended up 2nd on the Moon.
No one ever achieves a big goal without some detours along the way. Sometimes there is a missing piece that you need but will only find when you change course a bit. Go ahead, live your life, have integrity, some things just take time!
Also, you might be interested in my blog for students interested in aerospace, and I would appreciate your letting others in Russia know about it, I want folks everywhere to feel welcome:

Remember, your blog is an encouragement to all of us as well.

Hi :)
I just stumbled on to your blog, and I had a click around. Enjoyed it very much. I admire your dreams and motivation. Wish you strength, and an enjoyable ride till space!
All the best
"One small step for a student, one giant leap for Kuwaiti Women", congratulations, Maryam J, and may all your dreams come true.
HI Maryam .. Don't quit ..U should do all that it takes to realize your dreams ..life is too short ..believe me u r not missing much in Kuwait :P ..deeray balich and make us proud sis :D alla bless
Just found your site, will be coming back often.
I also have dreams of being an astronaut. I formulated this dream for myself freshman year in college, and then forgot about it. Now that I'm a senior and graduating in a month, I'm reminded all over again.
I'm not going to grad school directly, but working in software development when I graduate... I wonder if that can count as related work...
I'm from Russia originally (currently living in the US), so it's interesting to read about your studies there. Good luck to you!
I'm so proud of you :)
Maryam,
I have been following your blog and admire your efforts to achieve what you dreamed of. There are very few people who go after their dreams against all obstacles.I am sure you will be able to fulfil your dreams and that day will be the best day of your life. wish you all the very best.

I guess this is an old post.. :S.. hope to hear what u've been up to.
I came back just to discover the options that i've missed for 4 years. It isn't the pefect place, but i'd rather be here than kuwait. Don't stay in Kuwait at any cost. Staying there will corrupt u as human being. You can't afford that, and ur life should be more meaningful than merely counting the days, "oh god, another wasted day of my life"
You will have to take risky choices. Take them and don't look back. Just be responsible and happy with ur choices, even if they didn't turn out to be the smartest. So the coming few years when u do look back, you will know that u've tried when others just give up.
That's the only reason I came back to school. I was wasting my life in kuwait, and chasing after false dreams, "maybe things will get better," they never will.
Try to stay away from negative ppl. Don't even listen to what they have to say. In kuwait ppl are very good at putting you down, or imposing their lives on you. Remember you aren't them, and you don't wanna be. You can't stop dreaming and not let others dream.
Good luck, and hold on to every single hope. At least you're trying. Don't let urself be the first one to let u down. I swallowed my pride every single moment in kuwait. I surely don't want other who have potentian go thru the same thing.
I'm giving up an easy life to be a better person. Sure i miss my car and the salary that came so easily. But I'm happier now, and surely sleep better. I was walking in the university hallway yesterday, and thinking to myself, "this is where i want to be, this what i want to do." It a sense of relief inside.
Before I left kuwait, i intruded myself in conversation some guys were having about what majors they should go to in college. One of the guys wanted to be a Aerospace Engineer as well, and the other, much older guy was trying to change his mind, u know with the typical talk in kuwait, "what r u going to do with in here," i had to interfere. I told him once u dream of flying u can't imagine urself anything else, and believe me u won't be be happy being anything else.
Be happy, and be urself. You are who u are.
Amna
Girl i have to tell you...
your courage to follow your dream has inspired me.. you gave Me the courage i needed to pursue my own dreams
